Leachville Council reviews audit, promotes officer
Leachville Mayor Sheila Spurlock reviewed the 2010-2011 audit and reviewed needs for improvements at the July 8 city council meeting. The council accepted the report and explanations of compliance.
Police Chief Keith Evans gave the June Police Department report.
He said police officer Chuck Brown had requested a raise in pay and a promotion in rank, after completing specialized training classes.
"I could see paying him for teaching training classes, but not an increase in regular pay," City Clerk Ruth Ann Keith said. "We are going under fast financially."
The council went into executive session to discuss the promotion.
After reconvening the council voted to upgrade officer Chuck Brown from sergeant to lieutenant in charge of training, and to consider compensation for him when the 2014 budget is reviewed in October.
Fire Chief Mark Johnson complemented the volunteers who worked to clean up the property adjacent to the firehouse.
"This was quite a job," Johnson said. "We had about 10 people who worked on the project. The lot is looking very nice now, but we still plan to do more."
The Fire Department plans to apply for matching grants in order to obtain a new computer.
"We need to ask Ted Johnson, with the Computer Shop, to come and look at the computer and repair it if possible," Bill Hetler said.
"If it can be fixed we should do so, and if not we need to get them a new one," Tommy Stone said.
Councilmen expressed their appreciation for the Fourth of July fireworks display provided by the Cave Dwellers at the city park.
The tornado sirens have not yet been checked on a routine basis, but plans are to do so soon.
The next regularly scheduled council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at city hall.
