BIC School Board works through busy agenda

Buffalo Island School Board members accepted resignations, filled several positions, and worked through a busy agenda at the June 3 board meeting.

The board voted unanimously 7-0 to accept resignations from Trish Brightwell, biology teacher; Terry Cobb, second grade teacher at West Elementary; and Garrett Eoff, junior high math teacher and baseball coach.

New personnel hired included Alden Ashley, deaf interpreter; salary will be $25,000 on a 190 day contract. Rachel Hickman was hired as speech therapist and Coach Bill Taylor as high school baseball coach.

The board voted, 7-0, to change the number of student absences that result in loss of credit from 12 to 8 days.

The secondary counselor contracts (Ms. Olive and Ms. Willyerd) were changed to 11 months (220 days).

In other business:

*The board voted unanimously to establish a direct deposit payroll system for all employees to begin operation Jan. 1, 2014.

*The board voted to remove the phrase "immediate family" from the district's bereavement policy.

*The district will provide transportation for elementary students transferring between campuses only when the district requires the transfer.

*The board voted to pay Shirley Cato (retired elementary principal), who filled in for Nicole Stewart during maternity leave, $150 per day plus millage.

*The board set Lisa Moad, superintendent secretary, salary at $22,000 (240 day contract).

*the board commended Monda Hutchison for receiving a Digital Command Communication Grant in the amount of $51,782.85.
