Committee members of the Buffalo Island Relay for Life met Thursday evening to discuss upcoming events and make final plans for the 2013 event.
The Relay for Life will be held June 14 at the Leachville City Park. Cancer survivors will be introduced and the first lap will start at about 6:30 p.m. with honorary survivors and all survivors taking the victory lap. They will then be joined by family and friends.
This years' honorary survivors representing each town are Glenville Nettles, Monette; Juanita Hickman, Black Oak; Beverly Counts, Manila; Lindsey S. Lewis, Caraway; Donald Davis, Lake City; Sherry Cagle, Leachville; and Linda Mason, Cardwell.
Prior to the relay event, there will be a Survivor Social held at the Leachville Methodist Fellowship Hall at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9. All cancer survivors are encouraged and welcomed to attend.
Bank night will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Leachville City Hall, on June 11. Teams can turn in money raised and pick up tee shirts for their teams.
"I appreciate all of the support for the Relay for Life," Chairman Brenda Matheny said. "It is a combined effort. It takes all of us working together and all of the communities to make a successful Relay."
Matheny reminded everyone there would be several fund raising events held after the Relay with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society. There will be a golf tournament in August and a wrestling match in September. Matheny said there may be a ball tournament one weekend.
Luminaries are still available to purchase for $5 in memory of loved ones who have lost their battle to cancer or in honor of friends and family members who are survivors. The luminaries are placed around the walking track the night of the Relay serving to light the way. Luminaries are available through committee and team members.
For more information on participating in the Relay event or purchasing luminaries, persons may call Matheny at 539-6728.
