Old Nemesis Junction City ends BIC's State Tourney run
Buffalo Island Central faced off in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A State Softball Tournament in a rematch of last year's championship game against Junction City won by the Lady Dragons. Junction City came out on top again, squeaking past the Lady Mustangs 3-2 Friday afternoon at Norphlet, ending BIC's quest for a state title.
The Lady Mustangs won their opening round game with an easy 14-1 victory over Palestine-Wheatley in five innings.
BIC (21-6) scored 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Madison Greathouse earned the win, pitching three hitless innings while striking out four. Callyn Bird finished the game on the mound for the Lady Mustangs.
Greathouse slashed a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Brittany Fowler singled, tripled, scored twice and had a pair of RBI while Cassidy Qualls singled twice, drove in a run and scored two runs. Brittany Stockton, Kelsey Strickland and Bailey Owens all singled and drove in two runs apiece while Karo Thomas singled and scored twice for the Lady Mustangs.
BIC earned its way to the state tournament, sweeping through the 2A regionals earlier in the week at Tuckerman. The Lady Mustangs punched their ticket for a return trip to the state with a 6-2 victory over Cedar Ridge.
Madison Greathouse scattered eight hits while striking out six and walking four to earn the win. Karo Thomas went 2-3 and scored twice while Brittany Fowler had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Kelsey Strickland blasted a two-run double and added a single while Brittany Stockton also rapped a two-run double.
The Lady Mustangs shut out Salem 7-0 in the regional semifinals. Greathouse fanned 10 Lady Greyhounds while allowing just three hits to earn the win. Thomas singled, doubled and tripled while driving in a pair of runs and scored twice to lead BIC at the plate. Strickland had a two-run single and scored once while Qualls went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored.
BIC claimed the regional championship, rolling past host Tuckerman 9-2. Strickland powered the Lady Mustangs offensively, going 3-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Thomas singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run while Owens had three hits and a pair of RBI.
Fowler singled twice and drove in a run while Catherine Colbert had a pair of hits and scored once. Greathouse picked up the win, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walking one.
