Mother and daughter give to Locks of Love
Locks of Love got a double donation from mother and daughter, Shirley Wells and Brittany Howard. Shirley has been growing her hair for two years and donated over 10 inches. Brittany has been growing her for over a year and had as much to donate.
Glam owner/stylist Shannon Morris cut and styled the women's hair.
"With summer coming, I hope others will remember to think about cutting their hair. They can give to the Locks of Love, a not-for-profit organization, that creates custom-made vacuum-fitted hair pieces for children who have lost their hair because of medical hair loss."
The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. Each hairpiece is made from real human hair and children can even swim and shower in their hairpiece.
Hair must be at least 10 inches or longer, clean and dry. It is sent bundled in a ponytail or braid and must be free from chemical damage.
It takes six to 10 ponytails to make one hairpiece.
Shorter hair can be donated but it is sold to help offset manufacturing costs. A custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece starts at $3,500.
Brittany's grandmother is dealing with cancer and giving to the Locks of Love is something she wanted to do.
