Lady Mustangs take home district softball title
Buffalo Island Central's Lady Mustangs brought home the 2A-3 district softball crown with a 10-0, five inning victory over Marked Tree Tuesday afternoon at Rector.
Madison Greathouse fired a three-hit shutout to earn the win. The sophomore right hander struck out two, while issuing three walks on the day. Greathouse also laced a pair of singles and drove in a run while scoring three times. Brittany Fowler had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, as well as scoring twice. Jodiee Clay had a pair of singles and scored two times.
The Lady Mustangs advanced to the title game with an 8-7 victory over Marmaduke in the semifinals earlier in the day. Greathouse got the win, scattering 10 hits while giving up five runs. Greathouse fanned two and walked one. Greathouse helped her own cause with a single, a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Fowler also had a single and a double while Brittany Stockton added two singles and an RBI.
The Lady Mustangs' regional tournament opener at Tuckerman, scheduled for Friday, was washed out by rain. Play was set to resume on Monday. Complete coverage of regional and state tournament action will appear in next week's Town Crier.
Riverside dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Marmaduke in Monday afternoon's quarterfinal action, ending the Lady Rebels' season.
Riverside had the tying run at third base, but Marmaduke was able to get the final out and preserve the win. The Lady Greyhounds took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, before Jordan Miller's two-run homer closed the gap to 4-3.
