Mustangs defeat Cross County in extra innings
Buffalo Island Central pushed across four runs in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, and went on to defeat Cross County 5-1 in 2A-3 conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Cherry Valley.
Alan Carmichael scored the go-ahead run after reaching first base to begin the eighth. Carmichael took second on a single by Devin Ballin, and scored on successive wild pitches to give the Mustangs what proved to be the winning run. BIC added three insurance runs before the inning would end.
Alex Ballin teamed with Carmichael on a two-hitter. Ballin was the starter, throwing four shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three Thunderbirds. Carmichael earned the win, pitching the final four innings, allowing one run, one hit while striking out three.
Jacob Sanders led the Mustangs at the plate, going 3-5, while Devin Ballin added a pair of hits.
BIC fell behind Rector 5-0 and went on to drop a 7-5 decision to the Cougars Monday afternoon at Rector.
Rector jumped out on top with a five run first before the Mustangs rallied to pull within 6-5. The Cougars added an insurance tally with a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Mitchell Weber picked up the win for Rector while Daniel White had a single and a double to lead the Cougars at the plate.
Austin Pike led BIC with a single and a two-run double. Jacob Sanders absorbed the loss, pitching six innings of seven hit baseball.
BIC will begin district tournament play beginning Thursday afternoon at Rector.
