Mustangs slip past Thunderbirds with seventh inning run

Austin Pike drove in Evan Sanders with the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Buffalo Island Central to a 7-6 victory over Cross County in 2A-3 conference baseball action Monday afternoon at Monette.

BIC scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 6-5 lead before the Thunderbirds pushed across a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game.

Jacob Sanders led BIC with three hits while scoring twice. Pike, Alan Carmichael and Devin Ballin all added two hits apiece. Dilynn Strickland pitched six innings, but received a no decision. Strickland fanned four Cougars on the day. Jacob Sanders picked up the win in relief, after giving up the game tying run in the top of the seventh.

The Mustangs lost to McCrory 7-1 Wednesday afternoon. Alex Ballin suffered the loss, going three innings while giving up two earned runs. Carmichael pitched three innings and struck out three. Strickland had an RBI single to plate BIC's only run.

BIC finished the week, dropping an 11-0 decision to East Poinsett County Thursday afternoon at home.

The Lady Mustangs outslugged McCrory 8-4 Thursday afternoon in 2A-3 conference softball action. Catherine Colbert socked a pair of doubles and finished the day with three hits and a pair of RBI, while also scoring three times.

Bailey Owens slashed a pair of singles and drove in three runs while Kelsey Strickland added an RBI double and finished with two hits and a run scored. Madison Greathouse went 2-4, including a double and a run scored.

Greathouse (7-2) earned the win, going six innings. The sophomore right hander gave up two earned runs on five hits. Greathouse walked three and struck out three.

The victory improves the Mustangs to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in league play.
