Riverside Jr. High Quiz Bowl Team wins state title
The Riverside Junior High Quiz Bowl Team recently placed third in regional competition which was held Saturday, Feb. 2.
Placing in this competition allowed the team to advance to the state finals held Saturday, Feb. 23, at Pulaski Tech in North Little Rock.
Riverside played three preliminary games in the morning (winning one and losing two). The loses caused the team to have a lower ranking for the afternoon elimination rounds. Brenda Hutcheson, Riverside Quiz Bowl coach, said the team literally had to claw their way back to the top. "Each match was very tough because we were playing the number 3, number 2, and number 1 seeds," she said. "We did it though finally beating Junction City, Cotter, and Hazen."
In addition to the first place win, Riverside's team had two students that were chosen as all state tournament recipients (based on the amount of correct answers per match). Sam Meurer and Rocklan McCall won all tournament medals in both the regional and the state competition.
"It is very difficult to qualify for the all tournament recognition and even more difficult for a team to have two members qualify in the same competition," Hutcheson said.
Riverside School District was represented very well not only by the high academic ability displayed by the students, but by the integrity of the team members.
Riverside Jr. High Quiz Bowl team members are Sam Meurer -- captain; Rocklan McCall, Lauren Smith, Grant Mason, Luke Baker, Jordan Adams, Willow Booth, Cade Hill, and Zara Singleton.
Each team member would like to take this opportunity to thank the administration, staff members, and school board members for the support of their team.
