Top seeded Jessieville ends Lady Lions State Tournament stay
Jessieville used a strong second half performance, breaking a 20-20 halftime deadlock, and went on to defeat Manila 51-38 in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Riverview High School in Searcy.
Jessieville began the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 30-20 lead before Emily Cook hit a free throw with 4:15 left in the quarter for Manila's first point of the period. Justice Reliford pushed the Jessieville lead back to double digits before Devin Burrow and Cook answered with back to back buckets for the Lady Lions, slicing the Jessieville lead to 32-25 entering the final frame.
Burrow began the fourth quarter with a long three pointer to pull the Lady Lions to within 32-28, but Payton Lamb drilled a trey of her own to put Jessieville back up by seven with 6:08 to go. Seniors Kristen Wise and Shelby Wallace combined for three free throws to keep Manila close, but a Reliford basket at the 4:40 mark pushed the Jessieville lead to 39-31.
Both teams struggled to score over the next two minutes, until Reliford connected on both ends of a bonus to give Jessieville a 41-32 lead at the 2:24 mark. Burrow's seven foot floater sliced the Jessieville lead to 41-34 with 2:12 left in the game.
The Lady Lions fouled immediately, sending Lamb to the line where the senior hit both ends of the bonus to push the lead to nine. Manila misfired on its next possession, and was forced to foul once again, sending Amanda Rhodes to the charity stripe. Rhodes connected on both shots, building the lead to 45-34. Another Lady Lion miss, followed by two more Lamb free throws put the game out of reach. Burrow hit a late three, but it was too little too late as the Lady Lions saw their season come to an end.
Jessieville held a slim 8-5 lead after the first quarter before Manila battled back in the second period behind a three point barrage to forge a tie. Cook, Burrow and Kirsten Adcock all drained shots from beyond the three point arc as the Lady Lions outscored Jessieville 15-12 to tie the game at the half.
Peyton Herrell led Jessieville with 18 points while Lamb added 11. The Lady Lions connected on 18-24 foul shots and finished with five treys.
Burrow led Manila with 13 points while Cook and Wallace added nine points apiece. Adcock scored three, Wise had two while Taylor Teague and Charlie Smith contributed one point each. Manila finished 15-23 from the foul line and drained five three pointers on the afternoon.
