Buffalo Island Central superintendent announces plans to retire

Buffalo Island Central Superintendent George Edd Holland announced to the board at the Feb. 12 meeting his intent to retire from education effective June 30. Mr. Holland has 44 years in education, all in the Monette/BIC School District. He graduated from Monette High School in 1965 and came back to Monette where he taught senior high science for 11 years before accepting the position of high school principal and assistant superintendent for the next 10 years. He has served as superintendent of BIC for the last 23 years.

"I have been thinking about retiring for awhile and I think it is time," Mr. Holland said.

He has another year on his contract but said he plans to retire in 2013.

Following the approval of the minutes and warrant listings, board members voted unanimously (7-0) to accept the resignation of Kellie Russell, West gymnasium custodian/concession.

Darrin McFall moved to renew the district's School Board Legal Liability Insurance Policy with Bankcorp South with the general liability endorsement. The motion was approved unanimously.

Stacey Thomas then moved to continue the district's membership with Advanced Ed (NCA), which also carried unanimously.

Board members reviewed bids for entry locks replacement and upgrades for East Elementary, West Elementary, and Junior High. Bids included Beliew Paint & Glass, Inc. - $11,870.17; Ditta Door - $19,139; Tom's Lock & Key - $13,089. Jason Stewart moved to accept the bid form Beliew Paint & Glass, Inc., which passed unanimously.

Bids for mag lock systems with security cameras included: Ditta door-$2,262 each-no camera, no wiring to power supply; Advantage Security Systems - $2,600 each wiring and camera systems included, extra keypads, intercom, and cameras $300 each; NET Systems, Inc-door access system - $2,086.14 - $2,816.23 each door, varies by building. Thomas made the motion, seconded by Nathan sanders, to accept the bid from Advantage Security. The motion was accepted unanimously.

The board voted 7-0 to renew building principal contracts for the 2013-2014 school year. Principals are Dr. Kima Stewart, West Elementary; Nicole Stewart, East Elementary; Mark Hurst, junior high school; and Randy Rose high school.

Crystal Stevenson was hired by a unanimous vote as gymnasium custodian/East campus.

In other business:

*The district's membership with the ASBA Workers' Compensation Trust program was renewed.

*The board approved the transfer expenditures of $11,197.24 from the operating fund to Title I as listed.

*Changes to cheerleading rules and policies as recommended by Mark Hurst, junior high principal, and Randy Rose, senior high principal, and cheerleading sponsors were reviewed and passed unanimously.

*The board voted to use Liberty Bank in Monette to provide the district's banking services.
