Mustangs nip Rebels in District Tourney Semifinals

Third seeded Buffalo Island Central squeezed past second seeded Riverside 35-33 in semifinal action of the 2A-3 Junior High District Basketball Tournament Thursday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette.

The victory propelled the Mustangs into Saturday night's finals against East Poinsett County. Ryan Austin put together a double-double, scoring 18 points while snaring 11 rebounds to pace the BIC offensive attack. Trey Depriest added eight points, all in the second half, for the Mustangs. Evan Sanders tallied five points, Dustyn Myers pitched in three while Trevor Couch chipped in one point.

Luke Baker led the Rebels with 11 points. Baker drilled three treys on the night. Dylan Davis and Cannon Walling contributed six points apiece, Gavin Stone had five, Braden Overman tallied three while Andrew Murdie chipped in two points.

BIC led 7-4 after the opening quarter and held a 17-9 halftime advantage. Riverside pulled to within 23-20 after three periods of play.

Riverside advanced to the semifinals with a 46-45 victory over Cross County Monday night. The Rebels raced to a 12-7 lead after the first quarter before the Thunderbirds rallied for a 20-19 edge at the half. Riverside fought back to take a 36-30 lead heading into the final frame.

The Rebels built a double-digit lead before watching Cross County battle back to take a one point advantage with 20 seconds left. Dylan Davis grabbed a crucial offensive rebound off a missed free throw, and was fouled. The eighth grader went to the line and calmly sank both charity tosses, giving the Rebels a one point advantage with 11 seconds left in the game. A three point attempt by Austin Phelan missed its mark at the buzzer, allowing the Rebels to escape.

Jakeevus Jones scored a team high 23 points to lead the Thunderbirds. Phelan pumped in 13, including four three pointers for Cross County.

Gavin Stone scored a game high 24 points, including four treys to lead the Rebels. Luke Baker hit double digits, scoring 10 points. Andrew Murdie tallied six while Davis and Braden Overman added three points apiece.

Gavin Stone, Luke Baker and Braden Overman were all selected to the 2A-3 All-Conference team for the Rebels.
