It was with tears and well wishes co-workers, family and friends gathered at the Courthouse in Lake City to thank Wanda Shasteen for her 17-1/2 years with Craighead County Sheriff's Department. They also wished her well as she goes to a new career as Craighead County Chief Deputy Treasurer.
Wanda started her career with the sheriff's department in June of 1995 when Larry Emison was serving as Sheriff and Bud Moxley as Eastern District Sheriff. She has worked in the Lake City office during the tenures of several sheriffs including Sheriff Jerry Suiter, Sheriff Dale Haas, Eastern District Deputy Sheriff Terry McNatt, Eastern District Deputy Sheriff Dewaine Malone, Sheriff Jack McCann, and Eastern District Deputy Sheriff Garland Tipton. She has served as secretary and assisted with the DARE Officers as they go from school to school to work with the young people.
"The DARE program was not her job but she helped any way she could," Terry McNatt, longtime DARE officer said.
McNatt is also retiring from the Sheriff's Department with 21 years in law enforcement. He will be assuming the duties of Craighead County Treasurer, a position he was elected to in the November election.
"I will miss being here every day," Wanda said. "This is like my second home. I am also excited about starting my new career and I look forward to the future. I have enjoyed my years with the Sheriff's Department."
"We have worked together for many years and Wanda is the most honest and trustworthy person I've ever known," McNatt said. "She is a reliable person and works hard."
McNatt and present DARE Officer Jamey Carter presented Wanda with a plaque in appreciation of all she has done for the DARE program.
"I would not have made it through this first semester of DARE programs without Wanda's help," Deputy Carter said.
"She is the reason one officer is able to do the job and we did not have to have two DARE officers," McNatt said.
Deputy Sheriff Garland Tipton offered his appreciation to Wanda and Terry for their years of service and wished them well in the treasurer's office.
Wanda's husband, Mark, daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Dewayne Blocker, and grandchildren Kalli, Bradyn and Allie, were guests at the luncheon.
