Harrell farm recognized

The first Arkansas Century Farm Awards were presented at the Independence County Courthouse, in Batesville, on December 18. Eighty-five farms in Ark. qualified for the century farm family award, presented by Butch Calhoun, Ark. Secretary of Agriculture. Accepting the Joseph Wyatt Harrell farm award were owners Alvis and Nan Snider, of Monette. The third owner, Susie McAfee, of Jonesboro, was unable to attend the ceremony. Plans are to place the commemorative Century Farm sign, at the Harrell homestead site, located 4 miles northwest of Monette, in the Macey Community. The family farm has been owned and operated by Harrell descendants since 1877, and include Joseph Wyatt and Frances Hunton Harrell, Joseph Eli and Verna Vaughn Harrell, and Connie Jethro and Faye Marret Harrell.Joe Roy Harrell, of Downingtown, PA, was a former owner, along with his two sisters Nan Snider and Susie McAfee.

This Harrell farm was the only Century Farm recognized in Craighead County.
