Westside crushes Mustangs 70-24 in NEA Tournament action
Buffalo Island Central held a 12-11 lead over Westside at the 3:19 mark of the opening period, but the Warriors outscored the Mustangs 59-12 the rest of the way and coasted home to an easy 70-24 victory Thursday night in first round action of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
Austin Pike's lay-in gave the Mustangs their last lead of the night before the Warriors scored 13 unanswered points to take a 24-12 lead after the first quarter. Westside continued to pour it on in the second period, and led 37-17 after three consecutive treys, including back to back bombs by Zac Preston. The Warriors stretched their advantage to 45-19 at the half.
Westside held the Mustangs to just two third quarter points, an offensive stick-back by Pike, and took a commanding 55-21 lead into the fourth period. The Warriors cruised to the finish line from that point on to claim the 46 point victory.
Westside forced BIC into a whopping 23 turnovers while committing just five of their own.
Blake Price led the Warriors with 20 points while Preston had 15 and Gatlin Hufstedler added 11. Westside finished the night 11-17 from the foul stripe and drained nine three pointers.
Pike and Nick Bollinger led BIC with seven points apiece. Devon Ballin scored six while Alex Ballin and Jacob Sanders added two points apiece. The Mustangs hit three of four free throws and made one three pointer.
The Mustangs will return to action Jan. 4 when they play host to Augusta in a 2A-3 conference matchup.
