Friends run for a cause
Christie Baugher and Teresa Thomas Eastin finished their first half marathon (13.1 miles) last weekend at the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis. It was a life changing experience for the two long-time friends.
Christie and Teresa trained together for this race and were there for each other with encouraging words and were accountability partners.
Their friendship goes back a long way (over 30 years). Christie's mother, Norma Hamilton, kept Teresa during the summers while her mom worked.
"Mrs. Norma was and is like my second mom and Christie was a blessing to me then and still is today," Teresa said. "It was special to me to share this race with her."
Christie teaches third grade literacy/reading at Manila Elementary and Teresa serves as elementary counselor.
Both women have run in several 5Ks through the years.
Christie, who has been running for 10 years, has a new goal. She wants to run a full marathon and said what better cause than for St. Jude.
"Running in the St. Jude Marathon was an amazing experience," Christie said.
The event had 18,500 participants running 5K, half marathon, marathon and walking. It raised $5.7 million. It was a record year.
The St. Jude Marathon is held the same weekend every year and Christie encourages anyone interested in running for a great cause to be ready to join her next year.
