Lady Hounds run down Lady Mustangs with fourth quarter rally
Marmaduke used a fourth quarter rally to knock off Buffalo Island Central 65-54 in an early season showdown between two of the top teams in the 2A-3 conference Thursday night at Marmaduke.
The Lady Greyhounds trailed by two entering the fourth period, but outscored BIC 23-10 to take control of the game. Sophomore Sidnee Bopp connected on seven of eight fourth quarter free throws to help propel Marmaduke to the come from behind win. Bopp finished the night with 15 points off the bench while teammates Whitney Boggs and Cally Price chipped in 12 points apiece.
Marmaduke held a 14-13 edge after the opening period before the two teams went into the dressing room tied at the half, 27-27. BIC outscored the Lady Greyhounds 17-15 in the third quarter to take a 44-42 lead heading into the final frame.
Brittany Fowler led the Lady Mustangs, who fell to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play, with 15 points. Brittany Stockton scored 14, Emily Owens tallied nine, Cassidy Qualls netted seven, Katelyn Sparkman added five while Kandice Hodge contributed four to round out the BIC scoring on the night.
BIC began the week, crusing to a 68-31 victory over McCrory Monday night at Monette. The Lady Mustangs bolted to a 21-6 lead after the first period and held a 36-19 advantage at the half. BIC took a 55-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Fowler led BIC with 16 points while Stockton and Emily Owens also notched double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Sparkman tallied six, Hodge netted five, Qualls added four while Bailey Owens, Megan Webster and Madison Greathouse contributed three points apiece. Hannah Poe, Jodiee Clay and Shania Junyor added two points each.
In junior high action, BIC defeated McCrory 37-28 behind Blaire Wildy's 15 point performance. Ashley Field tallied seven, Mollie Couch scored six, Jona Carmichael netted three while Kayla Griffin, Molly Hart and Saide Lawson added two points apiece.
The junior Lady Mustangs slipped past Marmaduke 35-33. Wildy led BIC with 20 points, Griffin tallied seven, Field scored six while Lawson chipped in two points.
The Lady Mustangs will return to the hard court Tuesday night when they travel to Augusta to take on the Lady Red Devils. BIC will journey to Lake City Thursday night to do battle with archrival Riverside.
