Big Lake Chili Cook-off spans 26 years

The 26th annual Big Lake Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by the Manila Lions Club, was held Saturday, Oct. 6, with lots of chili, craft booths, bake sales, games, entertainment, duck calling competition, and a 5K Chili Pepper Run to start the day off.

The temperatures went down making it a great day for the chili with 28 teams competing for People Choice, as well as first place in the judging. The Leo Club had 11 teams participating.

Lion President Wendell Poteet expressed his appreciation to the young Leo members, as well as everyone who participated.

Manila Business Women served breakfast for over 100 and sponsored drawings for a television and a 50/50. Leonard Campbell won the 50/50 drawing and Stephanie Polston won the television. Brooke Dunigan won the $100 gift basket given away by Pam Fleeman, Mary Kay beauty consultant.

The first Chili Pepper 5K run drew a large crowd. It was held in conjunction with the 26th annual Big Lake Chili Cookoff.

Tucker Miller won the duck call given away by Acoustic Duck Calls.

Entertainment at the bandstand included Joe and Pam Chipman, Jeff Knowlton, The Bryant family (Brandon and daughters Abby and Charlsey and Tommy Morris.

An added feature was the 5K Chili Pepper Run/walk which kicked off the day at 8 a.m. with 112 participants ranging from ages 7 to 53. Scouts and other volunteers manned the check points along the way.

Butch Richenback, world champion duck caller and owner of RNT Duck Calls, and Chris and Amy Hill with Acoustic Duck Calls in Monette were on hand in Manila for clinics and duck calling competition.

Also there was a dog training exhibition with Garrett Meier.

Chili winners:

Junior Division - Leo Team 51, first place; Leo team 55, second place; Leo Team 47, third place.

People's choice - Westside Baptist Church.

Best of Show - Southern Bancorp.

Senior Division - KBG, first place; First Baptist Church, second place; Super Bowl Chili, third place.

Duck calling winners:

Team winners - Chris Hill and Brandon Brown, Monette, first place; Adam Emery and Gabe Wece of Illinois, second place; Steven Saranie Justin Hooton of Stuttgart, third place.

Main Street Open - Kyle Smith of Vilonia, Ark., first place; Stephen Saranie of Stuttgart, second place; Ryan Robinson, third place.

Youth Division - Gabe Wece, first place; Ryan Robinson, second place; Levi Woodall, third place.

There was a puppy raffle won by Brandon Brown.

Winning the Overall male division was Jacob Walker with an 18:40 time. Jessica Weiss won the overall female division with a 21:22 time.
