Blytheville Chili Cookoff 5K run/walk set
Area runners and walkers will be able to help the United Way of Greater Blytheville and its 16 area agencies during the fourth annual Blytheville Chili Cookoff 5K Run/Walk, set for Oct. 20 at the Blytheville Youth Sportsplex.
Participants can register online by visiting www.blytheville5K.webs.com. Online registration will be open until Thursday, Oct. 18. Runners and walkers can also register the day of the race, prior to 7:15 a.m. No registrations will be accepted after that time.
Sign-up forms are also available at several area businesses, including the United Way, Southern Bancorp, the ANC wellness center, Riston Fitness and the county extension office in Blytheville and at the Osceola Community Center.
Registration cost is $20. Participants will get a commemorative race t-shirt (while supplies last), as well as a goodie bag filled with items donated by local merchants.
Awards will be presented to top walkers and runners in the various age divisions. To qualify for the walking categories, participants must walk the entire course. Those planning on running any portion of the course should register as runners.
Tenaris is the sole sponsor of the 5K, which is part of several weekend activities associated with the Annual Blytheville Chili Cookoff, which raises money for the local chapter of the United Way. 100 percent of money raised in the 5K will stay in Mississippi County, benefitting organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Mississippi County, the Charles Strong Recreation Center, First Tee of Northeast Arkansas, the American Red Cross, the Special Olympics, the Haven, the Mississippi County Literacy Council and others.
The number of participants in the local 5K has grown in each year it has been held, with nearly 150 runners and walkers taking part in 2011. The 5K takes place on a flat, fast course beginning and ending at the Blytheville Youth Sportsplex. Professional race timing will be provided by Stearns Race Timing of Jonesboro.
