Helping others improves wellbeing

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Studies have found that helping others improves one's overall wellbeing and longevity. For 100 years, Arkansas Extension Homemakers Club Members have been making their local communities, counties, and state a better place for all through their volunteerism and leadership efforts.

Mississippi County Extension Club members put their leadership skills into action by volunteering to work at the Mississippi County Fair Educational Exhibits. Along with other community volunteers, the Extension Homemakers worked tirelessly as Fair Event Chairs and Co-Chairs, judges, and workers to ensure that the fair exhibit entries were cataloged, judged, and displayed appropriately. The educational exhibits would not be possible without the dedicated community volunteers.

Community Service through volunteerism is one of the key facets of membership in Extension Homemakers Clubs. The mission of Arkansas Extension Homemakers is to empower individuals and families to achieve the best quality of life through: continuing education, strengthening individuals and families, and developing personal skills through the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Mississippi County has four clubs who participate in a variety of educational, community service, and leadership programs and activities. The officers and members would be delighted to have new members, returning members, and new clubs in Mississippi County. The Extension Homemakers Clubs are open to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status. These clubs are located throughout the county and meet in public locations.

So the good news is joining a local Mississippi County Extension Homemakers Club can be beneficial to your health and wellbeing. Call Pam Pruett, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, at 870-762-2075 for more information and consider joining today. Remember, "Volunteers are not paid-not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless." (anonymous)
