Manila hosts MissCo elementary conference

The second annual Mississippi County Elementary Conference was held at Manila Elementary and Middle School on Thursday, Aug. 16, with 300 educators in attendance.

Some experiments were conducted outside of the classroom.

Connie Adams, volunteer coordinator for the event, said she was happy to have the teachers from across the county on campus.

Teachers attending were from Armorel, Osceola, Blytheville, South Mississippi County, and Manila.

Fifteen workshops were held with registration at 8 a.m. Morning and evening classes were held with lunch served on campus.

Workshops included:

*Economics Arkansas with LeAnn Helms and Jimmie Puckett, both of Manila.

*Quirkles with Tammy Winslow from CREC.

*WILD with Arkansas Game and Fish commission with Loren Rogers and Chuck Long presenting the program.

*Meet You in the Cemetery with Donna Jackson and friends. Jackson is a local author and historian from Manila.

*Integrating Math into the CCSS with Fran McDonald from CREC.

*Integrating Math into the CCSS with James Lee from CREC.

*Age Rings and other Math Games for Learning (Integrating Science in CCSS) with Wallece Brewer with Arkansas State University Rural Stem Department.

*History of Big Lake and the surrounding area with Jeremy Bennett, manager of Big Lake National Wildlife Service, Manila.

*Architectural Arkansas with Amanda Driver with the Arkansas Heritage Preservation Council.

*Art and Music in CCSS with Brooke Aguilar and Rodney Cooper, both Manila teachers.

*Rigor and Relevance with Dawn Bessee with CREC.

*Elementary Library, Books for Babes with Margo Reiser with the Craighead County Library.

*Literacy: Big Shifts with Karla Jones, CREC.

*Martha Ainsworth, author of "Teacher's Survival Handbook."

*Integrating Science led by Debby Rogers with Arkansas State Rural Stem Department.
