He presented an Ace Community Certificate to Buffalo Island as being part of the overall recipients of the 2011 Achievement of Community Excellence Award from the Mid-South Division.
Wallis said the overall area is within $3,000 to $4,000 of reaching goal this year. "Working together we can still make it by the end of August," he said.
"Aug. 3-5 weekend is the "Why Not" weekend and if all the communities work together, we will again for the third consecutive year reach or go over our goal," Wallis said. "This weekend will be dedicated to Dr. Gordy Klatt of Tacoma, Wash., who started the Relay for Life in 1985 which has become the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The first year he raised $27,000 walking the track. Dr. Klatt is now undergoing cancer treatments."
Buffalo Island committee members discussed themes, moving the Relay from June until September, activities, getting more teams involved, and having more activities during the Relay event.
