Manila Superintendent Pam Castor announced to the school board members at the May meeting the district's recent honor of receiving the Bronze Award in the U.S. News and World Report magazine. She said Manila High School was among the estimated 22,000 districts reviewed and named in the top 10 percent in the nation.
All school board members, Tracey Reinhart, Danny Robbins, Brandon Veach, Jeremy Jackson, Tony Crowell, Tommy Wagner and Johnny McCain, were present for the May 17 meeting.
Board members commended the teachers and staff for the rcognition.
Following the approval of minutes and review of the financial report, Ms. Castor distributed copies of model policies for the board to review, study, and compare to what the district presently has in place. Castor said Manila is already ahead on some of the model policies listed.
The board accepted the resignation of Coach Bill Taylor as of June 30, 2012; renewed Dana Ferguson's contract; and hired Lana Burnside as elementary teacher for the coming year.
Following a lengthy executive session, Mrs. Castor announced the accreditation status for the district.
"We have been accredited for the elementary and high school and were accredited with one cite for licenseure in the Middle School," Castor said. "The teacher has completed the study and received her license and now we are accredited in all buildings meeting all standards."
An early graduation request was reviewed and approved unanimously by the board.
The board received a letter from the Mayor Wayne Wagner, city of Manila, requesting a partnership/compensation on the use and upgrade of the city's ball park used by the high school teams. He said working together they can provide a nicer facility.
President Reinhart said the board had considered building ball fields as a future project and it may be time for the board to consider and compare costs.
In the administrative reports Ms. Castor informed the board the district had received a letter of recognition from the ACT commending the District's status in having students college and career ready.
The board again expressed their congratuations to the teachers and staff.
Mrs. Castor and the board congratulated the baseball team for winning the Regional Championship.
"We appreciate the work of our coaches and our teams," she said.
