Lady Mustangs punch ticket to Class 2A State Softball finals
Buffalo Island Central's Lady Mustangs plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on to beat Bigelow 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Junction City. The win propels BIC into the Class 2A State Championship game where they will meet Junction City Saturday morning at Lady Razorback Field in Fayetteville.
Saturday's victory improved BIC's record to 24-2 on the season, in stark contrast to last year when the Lady Mustangs managed just three wins. "From three wins a year ago to 24 this season, it's been an amazing year," said BIC Coach Marty Williford. "It's been a great ride. Hopefully we have one more victory left in us."
Brittany Fowler was the Lady Mustang's hitting star in Saturday's semifinal win, belting her first two career home runs while going 3-4 on the day. Fowler finished with three RBIs and scored twice. Callie Brooks added a single and a double and drove in a run while Bailey Owens had an RBI single and scored once. Catherine Colbert also had a hit and scored a run.
Madison Greathouse picked up the victory, going the distance, striking out nine while giving up only three hits and one earned run.
Bigelow took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Fowler drilled her first home run in the top of the third to tie the game.
Fowler put BIC ahead 2-1 with her second solo shot of the day in the sixth inning, but Bigelow came right back with a run in their half of the sixth to tie the game 2-2.
The Lady Mustangs' three run seventh inning rally was highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Owens and Fowler. Brooks drove in the final run of the inning before Greathouse shut down Bigelow in the bottom of the seventh, sending the Lady Mustangs to the state finals.
BIC started state tournament play with a 10-0 whitewash of Danville Thursday afternoon.
Madison Greathouse pitched a complete game, striking out nine, while allowing just one hit in six innings of work. Greathouse helped her own cause with a two-run double.
Karoline Thomas went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Callie Brooks had a single, a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Brittany Stockton added a single, a double, two RBIs and scored a run. Cassidy Qualls went 2-2, scored twice and added an RBI. Jodiee Clay and Brittany Fowler both singled and scored once while Bailey Owens drove in a pair of runs.
The Lady Mustangs shut out Spring Hill 10-0 in the quarterfinals, behind Madison Greathouse who fired a five inning no-hitter. Greathouse struck out one and issued two walks. She also went 1-3 at the plate and scored twice.
Callie Brooks went 2-2 including a three run homer and scored three times. Brittany Stockton went 2-3 including a three run double. Kelsey Strickland hammered a two-run homer and scored twice. Brittany Fowler ripped a double and scored one run while Karoline Thomas went 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
The Lady Mustangs outscored their three opponents 25-3 during their run to the state finals.
