American Red Cross Seeks Mississippi County Residents

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

BLYTHEVILLE - The American Red Cross will host two volunteer Disaster Response Team recruiting and application events for Mississippi County residents.

The first will take place from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at Gunn's Market in Wilson and will target South Mississippi County residents. The second event will be held from 2-6 p.m. Friday, May 11 at the Farmers Market in Monette and will target Buffalo Island residents.

There are a variety of skills that volunteers perform from damage assessment, to mobile truck drivers, to prepping and managing shelters during large disasters. Logistics and computer skills, as well as mental health, social workers and nurses are also encouraged to volunteer.

Volunteers are also needed for long periods of time following the disaster to do office type work such as typing reports, putting together comfort kits, and simply sitting in the chapter office or Emergency Operation Center answering the telephones. The skills learned in Arkansas are consistent with Red Cross training nationally.

Anyone wanting more information should contact Penny Sanders through the Blytheville office of the American Red Cross Northeast Arkansas Chapter at 870-763-4481, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30pm. Additional information on the American Red Cross in Arkansas including disaster and safety tips and health and safety classes can be found at www.arkansasredcross.org.
