Buffalo Island Central whipped Quitman 6-1 in the semifinals of the 2A North Regional Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at Newark. The Lady Mustangs will face conference foe Rector, a 4-3 winner over Marked Tree, for the title Monday afternoon at 2:30.
BIC (20-2) jumped to a quick 3-0 lead over Quitman in the top of the first inning. Quitman answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning against winning pitcher Madison Greathouse, but the Lady Mustang right-hander shut out the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the game to nail down the victory. BIC added three insurance runs, two in the fifth and one in the seventh, to put the game out of reach.
Greathouse struck out six batters while scattering seven hits on the day. She also finished with a pair of hits and scored twice.
Callie Brooks pounded out three hits and drove in four runs while Kelsey Strickland went a perfect 4-4, including a double and two runs scored. Caroline Thomas had a pair of hits and drove in a run while Bailey Owens finished 2-4 on the day.
The Lady Mustangs began the tournament Friday afternoon, crushing host Cedar Ridge 10-0 in six innings.
Greathouse picked up the win, holding Cedar Ridge to only one hit while striking out six hitters.
Greathouse helped herself with a single, a double and a run scored. Strickland had a pair of hits and drove in three runs while also scoring a run for BIC. Thomas had two hits, drove in two runs and scored a run while Owens lashed a pair of singles while scoring twice and driving home a run.
