Cedarville rallied past Manila 53-42 in the first round of the 3A State Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Fordyce, ending the Lion's season. The Pirates (31-3) overcame a 24-23 halftime deficit to pull out the victory at Redbug Arena.
Nathan Fort had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates. "Nathan is averaging almost nine boards a game, so that's not out of the ordinary for him," said Cedarville Coach Andres Tencleve. "He's an excellent rebounder," added Tencleve.
Manila (20-11) fell behind 15-10 after the opening period but rallied for a one point lead at the half by outscoring the Pirates 14-8 in the second quarter. Cedarville regained the lead 36-30 entering the fourth period.
Manila pulled to within 46-42 with 2:20 left in the game when senior guard Dillon Burrow came away with a steal and drove the length of the court for a bucket, but it would be the last points of the day for the Lions.
Joining Fort in double figures for the Pirates was Jordan Wiley with 11 points, Keith Simpkins also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Dalton McKenzie added 10 points.
Burrow paced the Lions with 13 points while Brady Jones chipped in 12. Scott Eubanks scored eight, Zack Day tallied six before fouling out while Blake Carr added three points.
