Buffalo Island Relay for Life committee members discuss upcoming events

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Members of the Buffalo Island Relay for Life steering committee and team members met with Chairman Brenda Matheny on Thursday evening to discuss upcoming events.

The theme for the 2012 Buffalo Island Relay for Life is Carnival Celebration -- Walking the midway, fighting for a cure, one step at a time.

Matheny asked members to submit names for honorary survivors for the June 22 Relay event.

Some of the upcoming fundraising events include a gong show at the Melody Theater scheduled for April 13. Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for children. Anyone interested in being part of the show can contact Matheny at 243-3337 or pick up a form at Leachville City Hall.

"We need to encourage more people to form teams to join us in the fight against cancer," Matheny said.

There will be a road block for the Relay for Life in Leachville and Manila on April 14.

Wrestling is scheduled for May 5 at the Manila Community Center.

"We appreciate the wrestlers and volunteers who bring the annual wrestling event to benefit the Relay for Life," Matheny said.

The committee talked about other possible fundraising events.

Community representative Jackie Wallis spoke to the committee members challenging them to take part in Leap Day, Feb. 29.

"Just ask your friends to give you $4 in conjunction with Leap Day which comes around every four years," he said. "Let me know how many pledges you collected at the end of the day." He gave the steering committee five quarter rolls each and asked them to collect quarters from friends and family to fill the rolls by the next meeting."

The next meeting for the Buffalo Island Relay for Life will be 6:30 p.m. March 22.

Wallis announced other Relay dates including Jackson County in Newport on April 13; Craighead County and Randolph County, June 1; Greene County, June 8; and Clay County, June 15.
