Rebels knock off second and third seeds
Riverside's unlikely run to the 2A-3 District Tournament title game at Cherry Valley included a pair of heart-stopping victories over Marmaduke and Marked Tree.
The Rebels began the tournament by ending arch-rival Buffalo Island Central's season with a 74-57 victory Tuesday night. Things would get much more interesting in the quarterfinals and semifinals, as Riverside would need some good fortune to knock off the Greyhounds and Indians.
The drama began in the quarterfinals when Riverside, who came into the tournament as a number seven seed, shocked third seeded Marmaduke 46-43 on Logan Meurer's 40-footer that popped the net at the buzzer, punching the Rebel's ticket to this week's regional tournament at Monette.
In Riverside's semifinal win over second seeded Marked Tree, the Rebels trailed 52-50 after Indian junior Allen Buchanan scored on a breakaway dunk with 30 seconds left. The Rebels tied the game when Alteeno Sain scored from the inside with seven seconds remaining. Marked Tree crossed the centerline in the waning seconds and called time-out with two ticks left. Unfortunately for the Indians, they were out of time outs, resulting in a technical foul that sent Sain to the free throw line where the junior connected on the second of two foul shots, giving Riverside the improbable 53-52 victory.
Sain pumped in 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots in the win over Marked Tree. Caleb Waugh added 13 points, including four treys. Logan Meurer scored 10 while Cole Winford and Morgan Fletcher added two points apiece.
Buchanan led the Indians with 15 points while Darius Ivy added 13.
Riverside led 20-14 after the first period and 30-24 at the half. Marked Tree rallied in the third period to take a 43-40 edge into the final frame.
Meurer led the Rebels in their quarterfinal win over Marmaduke with a game high 18 points. Sain and Dylan Wright scored seven points apiece, Waugh netted six, Winford tallied five while Braden Peaster chipped in three.
Zach McDowell led the Greyhounds with 13 while Kasey Reagans and Will WInberry added 11 each.
The Greyhounds held a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter and led 27-20 at the half. The Rebels rallied in the third period to pull to within 33-32 heading into the fourth period.
Sain pumped in a game high 31 points in Riverside's win over BIC. Meurer added 19 more while Waugh scored 12 on four three pointers. Winford and Jacob Jordan netted three points each, Fletcher tallied two while Brandon Sain chipped in one point.
Dilynn Strickland led the Mustangs with 16 points while Logan Dewitt added 14. Dewitt drained four three pointers on the night. Nick Bollinger also hit double digits, scoring 12 points. Josh McCormick netted six, Jeremy Smith added five while Alex Field chipped in four points.
Riverside will open regional tournament play Thursday afternoon at 5:30.
