Buchanan sparks Indians past BIC 68-35
Allen Buchanan began Friday night's game at Buffalo Island Central with a thunderous dunk, sparking the Indians to an easy 68-35 victory over the Mustangs in 2A-3 conference basketball action.
Buchanan, who finished the night with a game high 21 points, helped the Indians jump to a 24-7 lead before the Mustangs cut the margin to 24-14 midway through the second quarter. The Indians went on a 12-4 run to close the half to take a 36-18 advantage into intermission.
Gunner Pitts powered his way for 14 points while Darius Ivy added 13 for Marked Tree.
Nick Bollinger led the Mustangs with 11 points while Dilynn Strickland added nine.
The Mustangs began the week dropping a 64-38 decision Tuesday night at Marmaduke. Morgan Hawley pumped in 21 points while Zach McDowell and Derrick Donnell added 13 and 10 points respectively for the Greyhounds.
Marmaduke held a nine point lead, 34-25, at the half, and blew the game open in the third period, outscoring BIC 24-6 to take a commanding 58-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Jeremy Smith paced BIC with 10 points. Josh McCormick tallied six, Wes Colbert netted five, Alex Field, Nick Bollinger and Dilynn Strickland chipped in four points apiece while Drake Brown flipped in three points. Alex Ballin added two points to round out the Mustang scoring attack.
The losses dropped BIC to 15-13 overall and 6-9 in conference play.
In junior high action, BIC fell twice, losing 40-38 Tuesday night at Marmaduke and Friday night at home 52-41 to Marked Tree.
Eddie Page led the Greyhounds with a game high 25 points. Marmaduke led 17-13 after the opening period before BIC took a 26-25 halftime edge. The Mustangs stretched their advantage to 33-30 after three quarters before Marmaduke rallied in the final frame, outscoring BIC 10-5 to secure the win.
Austin Pike led BIC with 16 points while Alan Carmichael scored 12. Jerry Cazares tallied four while Johnathan Mondragon, Erik Navarro and Tyler Myers added two points apiece.
BIC held a 14-10 lead over Marked Tree after the opening period before the Indians rallied for a 26-22 halftime advantage. The Mustangs fought back in the third quarter to take a 35-33 lead, heading into the fourth period. The Indians exploded for 19 fourth quarter points, holding BIC to just six to take home the victory.
D'Angelo Grippin and Terry Carter led Marked Tree with 15 points apiece.
Alan Carmichael led the Mustangs with 11 points while Jerry Cazares added 10. Austin Pike and Tyler Myers scored six points apiece, Hunter Costner netted five while Johnathan Mondragon chipped in three points.
The losses drop BIC's record to 17-9 overall and 9-5 in league play.
BIC will return to action Thursday night when they travel to Jonesboro to play Ridgefield Christian in a non-conference matchup. The Mustangs will return to conference action Friday night when they play host to Rector.
