Manila opened the 2011-12 basketball season, splitting a pair of senior girls games last week. The Lady Lions dropped a heartbreaking 58-56 decision to Rector Monday night before coming back to take a 65-56 victory over Brookland Thursday night at Manila.
Kendal Gunn pumped in a game high 18 points to lead the Lady Cougars, who held a 20-11 lead after the first period of play, and a 36-29 advantage at the half. Rector took a 51-42 lead into the final period of play before Manila's rally fell just short in the waning seconds.
Taylor Teague led the Lady Lions with 17 points while Shelby Wallace also hit double digits with 11. Kailen Shelton scored nine points while Kirsten Adcock added eight. Charlie Smith scored five while Devon Burrow and Emily Cook added three points apiece.
Manila went to the foul line 36 times, connecting on 25, and hit five three pointers. Rector hit just 15-27 foul shots but drained seven treys on the evening.
Manila jumped to a 20-9 lead after the opening period and held on for a nine point victory over the Lady Bearcats Thursday night. Taylor Teague led Manila with 19 points while Kailen Shelton and Kirsten Adcock added 14 and 11 points respectively.
Kayla Kee scored a game high 21 points for Brookland while Samantha Flowers and Jordan Maynard added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Manila won the junior girls game 52-42.
