Big Lake Chili Cook-off offering $1,000 prize

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

It is time to get out original chili recipes. Manila Lions Club will sponsor the annual Big Lake Chili Cook-off Saturday, Oct. 1. Chairman Tony Crowell said the chili will be ready to serve at 10 a.m. Teams will start setting up at daylight or before. The booths will be set up on Dewey Street, just off main street.

In the adult division, there will be a $1,000 first place prize; $500 for second; and $300 for third.

First, second and third place trophies will be awarded in the junior division.

In addition to chili, there will be showmanship trophies awarded.

Entry fee for either a chili booth or a craft booth will be $30.

For more information or to sign up, contact Crowell at 561-5433.

"The price of a bowl is $4 and a drink is $1, the same as last year," Crowell said. "People will be able to sample chili from all of the booths and have the opportunity to vote for the People's Choice award."

Ty Presson is entertainment chairman. Anyone wishing to participate can contact Crowell or Presson at 243-3763.

Manila Business Women will serve breakfast at the Depot Center and have fried pies for sale.

"This will be our 25th annual Chili Cook-off," Crowell said. "We have a great organization and we are open to new members."

Crowell encourages teams to come back and new teams to join in.

"We are looking forward to a great chili cook-off day," Crowell said.

The Lions Club works toward sight conservation for area residents, sponsors the Christmas Goodfellow baskets each year and works to meet other community needs.
