Library summer reading programs successful

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Summer Reading Club was a great success in the Craighead County libraries of Caraway, Lake City and Monette. This year's theme was One World Many Stories. Adults and children of all ages learned about life in different countries and cultures. Travelling story teller, Patty Brooks, introduced the children to a new country each week. They helped Ms Patty read stories, sing songs, do flannel board stories and make crafts.

Patty Brooks has storytime.

The libraries also had special guests and performers throughout the summer. All three branches enjoyed the magical talents of Rocky Clements Magic Show. Lake City and Monette learned about life in Uganda from Brenda Hutcheson. They also learned about dairy cows when Southwest Dairy Farmers brought a milk cow to the libraries. The farmer talked about cows and milk and demonstrated how the cows are milked with an automatic milking machine. Lake City children had another visit with animals when Jason and Tabitha Mullins brought several small farm animals to the library.

The children read hundreds of books and won many prizes for their efforts.

Prize winners for Caraway were Isebelle Hauptman and Shey Williams, adult winner.

All children received prize bags at Lake City and Monette, but the grand prize winners were Ryley Eakins, Rylee Lisk, Brittney and Chris Sain (Lake City) and Krystal Cohn (Monette).

The libraries would like to thank their business donors, Farmers Market, Iberia Bank, Tax Plus, I.D. Industrial and Dollar General. Without their help the summer reading programs would not be such a success.
