Buffalo Island Central spoiled Manila's home opener with a 68-51 victory Monday night in senior high girls basketball action. The two teams battled on even terms for the first three quarters before BIC exploded in the fourth period, outscoring Manila 21-6 to secure the win.
Lady Mustang Brittany Fowler led all scorers with a game high 30 points. Cassidy Qualls was the only other Mustang in double figures, netting 12 points. Brittany Stockton scored six, Jenna Pike, Taylor Owens and Hayley Parker all tallied five points apiece, Emily Owens netted four while Jenny Walker added one point.
Manila placed three players in double figures, led by Emily Cook and Shelby Wallace, who scored 12 points apiece. Kirsten Adcock nailed three treys and tallied 11 points on the night. Cortney Craine scored nine while Taylor Teague and Peyton Joyner added four and three points respectively.
The Lady Mustangs also won the junior high contest 47-31. BIC placed nine players in the scoring column, led by Hannah Poe and Candice Hodge, who scored eight points apiece. Megan Holden and Bailey Owens tallied seven points apiece, Kelsey Strickland netted six, Madison Greathouse and Taylor McKuin scored four points each while Katie Lomax contributed one point.
Deven Burrow drilled four treys on her way to a game high 18 point performance to lead the Lady Lions in scoring. Kailen Shelton and Haley Hicks scored four points apiece, Lauren Woody tallied three while Heather Hollis and Taylor Harmon contributed one point each.
BIC improved to 8-0 on the season, pulling out a 54-51 victory over Bergman Friday night at Monette. Brittany Fowler paced the Lady Mustangs with 25 points while Cassidy Qualls and Emily Owens scored 12 points apiece. Qualls added five steals while Owens drilled three treys. Jenna Pike scored six points and had five steals while Taylor Owens added five points. Jenny Walker and Brittany Stockton tallied two and one point respectively.
BIC led 20-12 after the first period before Bergman rallied to pull within 28-25 at intermission. The Lady Mustangs took a 45-41 lead heading into the final quarter and held on for the three point victory.
Manila traveled to Brookland Thursday night but came home with a narrow 69-65 loss to the Lady Bearcats. Manila trailed by 11 points in the fourth quarter but came roaring back with a barrage of three pointers.
Kirsten Adcock drilled six three pointers on the night while Emily Cook drained five, including four in the last 1:30 of the game, but Brookland withstood the Lady Lion onslaught and held on for the win.
Brookland placed four players in double figures, led by Kayla Kee, who scored 18 points. Jade Stevens recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jordan Maynard scored 15 and Samantha Flowers added 14 more.
Emily Cook and Kirsten Adcock led the Lady Lions with 18 points apiece while Shelby Wallace added 16 more.
Manila won the junior high contest 41-39.
Brookland defeated Riverside 56-38 Monday night at Lake City. The two teams battled to a 23-23 halftime tie, but the Lady Bearcats outscored Riverside 33-15 in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Jade Stevens recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Brookland while Lady Rebel Meagan Goza led all scorers with 16 points.
Kenzley Wilson scored a game high 18 points as the junior Lady Rebels stormed past Brookland 42-19.
Gosnell's Kemahri Soward hit two free throws with one second left in the second overtime to hand Riverside a heartbreaking 44-43 defeat Thursday night in non-conference action at Caraway.
The Lady Rebels held a 16-8 lead after the first quarter and went into the dressing room ahead 23-19 at the half. The Lady Pirates outscored Riverside 14-6 in the third period to take a 33-29 lead into the final frame. The game was tied 38-38 at the end of regulation.
Soward led Gosnell with a game high 17 points while Shanice McClain added 12 more.
Riverside, who dropped to 1-6 on the year, was led by Megan Goza, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. Bekah Frayer added 11 points and five steals.
Riverside's junior Lady Rebels improved to 7-1 on the year with an easy 45-15 win over Gosnell. Kenzley Wilson paced Riverside with 14 points and eight assists while Anna Brickell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
