Manila students hold a walk for cancer

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Manila FCCLA sponsored a Cancer Awareness Walk on Monday morning doing five laps around the football field. With half the student body and several staff joining in the walk, the funds will be used for scholarships. Scholarships will be established in honor of Donna Walls, a breast cancer survivor, and in memory of Jenanne Martin, the wife of former Manila teacher Lloyd Martin. Mrs. Martin lost her battle to ovarian cancer last year.

Walls and Mr. Martin were on hand for the walk and were recognized by teachers LeAnn Helms and Mary Smith.

"Research is showing thewe can be hopeful that within five years there may be a vaccine for breast cancer," Helems said.

The walk and fund-raising event is part of the FCCLA Star Events.
