The Monette Buffalo Island 4-H Club educational exhibit was named overall Best of Show last week during the Northeast Arkansas District Fair in Jonesboro and was awarded $175 in prize money.

The fair booth exhibit was titled "Me and My Community" and depicted individual growth attained by being a community volunteer.

The backdrop for the exhibit depicted a large forest with blue skies overhead. Three fall foliage covered trees held listings of age appropriate things that can be done in a local community. These included reading for children at the local library, city beautification projects, cemetery clean up, and fundraisers such as United Way, St. Jude's Hospital, March of Dimes, Circle of Hope, Make a Wish, and Salvation Army.

The 2010 Buffalo Island 4-H exhibit won overall Best of Show at the NEA District Fair.

Quotes on the brochure handout included: "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth," by Mohammed Ali; "I always wondered why someone didn't do something about things, then I realized I was somebody," by Lily Tomlin; and "Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another," by Erma Bombeck.

Two planning meetings were held where club members built the booth and prepared it for transport. The exhibit was set up at the NE District Fair on Sept. 11 and viewed by visitors to the fair until Sunday, Sept. 19.

The Best of Show exhibit scorecard listed high marks for the booth in appropriateness of theme, presentation, title selection, design, printed visuals, delivery of message and total effectiveness.

Four-H members taking part in the fair exhibit planning, construction, transport, placement and dismantling included Anna Ballard, Cecilee Brinkley, Madeline Brinkley, Nathan Brinkley, Madigan Carroll, Destany Cavner, Drake Cobb, Jonnah Gamble, Alessa Hughes, Olevia Hughes, Aaron Slackerd, Julie Thompson, Micah Thompson and Greydon Williams. Adult helpers included 4-H Leader Nan Snider, Beth Thompson, Lisa Gamble, Betty Thompson and Vickki Carroll.
