Local historian gathering information to honor veterans
Donna Jackson of Manila has long been interested in compiling and gathering history of the area for future generations. She compiled information and published a history book in conjunction with Manila's centennial birthday. She asked for names of veterans and published names in the book.
She wants to see area veterans get the recognition they deserve and has started a new project and plans to compile a book. This book will have as many names and biographies of area veterans she can find.
Jackson has prepared questionnaires for veterans or family members to fill out with information for the book. Questionnaires are available at Delta Drug, the Manila Library, or from Skip Evans or J.C. Green.
Mr. Evans and Mr. Green are assisting Jackson in gathering information to recognize area veterans.
"This is something I have wanted to do for many years," Jackson said. "My cousin's son, Tyler Parten, was killed in Afghanistan last year. We should not forget the sacrifices he and other service men and women have made. I want all of the Manila and surrounding area veterans to be recognized and listed in the book so we will never forget what they have done for us."
