Area Schools Open 2010 Golf Season

Manila began the 2010 golf season on a winning note, sweeping all three of its matches during a hot and humid week.

The Lions began the week winning a three team match at the Victory Lake Golf Course in Corning, shooting a team score of 105. Manila was led by Garrett Scott who fired a one under 34 to claim medalist honors. Senior J.J. Helton shot an even par 35 while Tracey Reinhart came in with a one over par 36 as the Lions took a 16 stroke victory over second place Pocahontas who shot a 121 team score. Piggott finished third with a team score of 132.

Mikayla Shedd shot a 53 for the Lady Lions.

Manila traveled to Marked Tree Wednesday afternoon and defeated a four team field at the Three Rivers Country Club. The Lions held off Buffalo Island Central 114-117 to take the team match. East Poinsett County was another three strokes back, shooting a 120. Marmaduke was a distant fourth with a 155 total.

Manila's J.J. Helton was the medalist on the day, shooting an even par 36. Tracey Reinhart was another shot back at one over 37. Blake Carr fired a 41 while Garrett Scott shot a 44.

BIC was led by Alex Field who came in with a one over par 37. Nathan Whitlow and Daniel Davis both shot 40's while Forest Robertson fired a 42. EPC was led by Martin Powell who shot a two over 38.

The Lions closed the week with a victory Thursday afternoon at the Links in Jonesboro. Manila's 111 score was 12 shots better than second place Pocahontas, who shot a team score of 123. Nettleton finished third at 125 while Westside brought up the rear with a 147.

J.J. Helton won medalist honors with a three over round of 34. Blake Carr came in second with a 38 while Tracey Reinhart fired a 39. Garrett Scott shot 41 on the day.

Mikayla Shedd came in third in girls play, firing a 52 on the afternoon.

The Lions will next play Monday afternoon at the Thunder Bayou Golf Course in Gosnell before coming home Tuesday afternoon to play at the Manila Country Club.

The Lady Mustangs opened their season Wednesday afternoon at Marked Tree, shooting a team score of 147. Sarah Roddy led BIC with a 45 while twin sister Lauren Roddy fired a 48. Shania Junyor fired a 54, Rachel Simmons came home with a 58 while Brittany Stockton shot a 64.

BIC sent five players to the Paragould Country Club Thursday afternoon. Alex Field led the Mustangs, shooting a 43, while Forest Robertson and Drake Brown both shot 51's. Lauren Roddy led the Lady Mustangs with a 39 while Sarah Roddy was one shot back with a score of 40.

Buffalo Island Central will play Monday and Tuesday afternoons in Jonesboro. The Mustangs will play at Sage Meadows Monday and at the Links on Tuesday.
