Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Lake City Council took the steps necessary at the July 19 meeting to proceed with the special election to decide on a one percent city sales tax. The sales tax issue will be taken to the voters for the final decision.

City Clerk Linda Simpson read Ordinance 245-10, an ordinance providing for the levy of a one percent sales and use tax within the city of Lake City. Following the reading in its entirety, motions were made to suspend the rules and accept the second and third reading by title only.

The ordinance was passed unanimously.

A second Ordinance 246-10, an ordinance calling a special election in the city of Lake City on the question of levying a city wide one percent sales and use tax was read in its entirety on the first reading and the second and third time by title only before being approved unanimously.

Alderman present included Harold Barker, Brenda Hutcheson, Ann Davis, Tommy Eakins, Jeffrey Wisham, and Jon Milligan.

Mayor Billy Anderson introduced Sgt. Steve Chamness who addressed the council requesting a salary increase from 75 cents to $1 per hour.

Sgt. Chamness explained his recent sergeant status had nothing to do with the request. He was requesting the increase due to additional duties he performs for the police department including electrical wiring and computer work, cameras, lighting, etc. He went on to say in his 10 years of employment, he had never asked for an additional salary increase.

After a lengthy discussion on the city's employee evaluation system, a motion was made by Alderman Hutcheson to not give the raise at this time but to look into an evaluation system for employee raises and set an October/November time frame to implement the program. Motion was seconded by Alderman Davis and accepted unanimously.

Mayor Anderson presented a Certificate of Appointment from the Commissioners of the Lake City Housing Authority approving the appointment of Sue Hood as commissioner for a term to begin June 1, 2010 through May 31, 2015. The appointment was approved unanimously.
