Vernon Dowless

Vernon Dowless, 92, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Craighead Nursing Center. He was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Monette to the late Irvin and Rose Dowless. Vernon lived most of his life in the Caraway area. He married Louise Stokes Dowless in 1939 and celebrated 71 years together in January.

Vernon had a deep love for his family and his country. He was a World War II Navy veteran, retired farmer, past member of the Craighead County Quorum Court, member of the Lion's Club, a Mason and active member of the Community of Christ Church in Caraway. He loved being outdoors. Gardening and hunting were two of his favorite pastimes.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Dowless; two sons, Fred (Beverly) Dowless and Leland Dowless all of Jonesboro; three grandsons, Brant Dowless, Shane Dowless and Kyle Dowless; three great-grandchildren, Lauren Dowless, Evan Dowless and Channa Dowless.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Levi Dowless and Eugene Dowless; three sisters, Louise Woods, Goldie Smith and Ina Mosley.

A celebration of his life was held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Community of Christ Church in Caraway with Kenny Qualls and Gary Earnhart officiating. Burial followed in Monette Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Caraway.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Gregg Funeral Home in Caraway.

Honored to serve as pallbearers were Kenny Weathers, Charles Smith, Hunter Miller, Brant Dowless, Kyle Dowless and Shane Dowless. Honorary pallbearers were Lynn Haag, Clyde Woods, Vernon Coggins, Kermit McCord, Jim Boyd, Sonny Miller and Jim Ladd.
