BIC Quiz Bowl team finishes fourth in state
The Buffalo Island Central Senior High Quiz Bowl Team finished their year on a very positive note. After taking first place in the 2A Regional Tournament, the team advanced to the state tournament in Hope.
Sixteen teams competed at the state level. After playing three preliminary rounds of academic questioning and winning each, BIC was seeded first place for the afternoon session. The team won their first afternoon match after a hard fought tie leading to a nerve racking "sudden death" tie breaker."
This put BIC in the semi-finals against Murfreesboro. Winning the next match would have put them in the finals on the AEN Network televised April 24.
BIC lost that match, their sixth played of the day, putting them into the play for third or fourth place. They played Cotter losing by one question. It was a heartbreaking loss, but a very good fourth place finish for this very young team. They were recognized on AETN as being fourth in the state in their division. Murfreesboro went on to win the 2A State title.
Team members were: Captain -- Colby Qualls, Amber Rolland, Calvin Wallace, Ana Meza, Katherine Clowers, Nathan Whitlow, Haylee Paker, scorekeeper-Timothy Neal, and Coach Patty Qualls. Rebecca Clowers accompanied the team to state serving as judge. Marlene Whitlow chaperoned all tournaments with the team this year.
"You couldn't find a more dedicated team," Ms. Qualls said. "These students have worked so hard this year to achieve this status. They eagerly await next year. They hope to place even higher."
