Piggott scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and used a strong pitching performance from Alex Samples to stun Manila 2-1, claiming the Class 3A Region 3 Tournament Championship Tuesday afternoon at Tuckerman.

Samples (6-3) went the distance, striking out five Lions to gain the victory for the fourth seeded Mohawks, who improved to 15-8 on the season.

Piggott got on the board first in the opening inning on Spencer Coomer's RBI groundout. Manila answered in the bottom of the first when Zach Birmingham laced an RBI single, tying the game 1-1.

Taylor Morgan, who turned in a strong pitching performance of his own, led off the inning with a double to right field. After a one-out walk to Tray Malone, Birmingham drilled a single up the middle, scoring Morgan, but Malone was cut down at the plate attempting to give the Lions the lead.

Morgan went the distance, allowing only five hits while striking out two. The right-hander issued four walks while giving up both runs, one earned.

"It was a good pitcher's duel today," said Manila Coach Steve Milligan. "Taylor Morgan did everything I asked of him on the mound. He pitched a great game. We just couldn't punch across enough runs. If we get pitching like that in the state tournament we will be fine."

The Lions dropped to 16-7 on the season.

Manila was rained out in the opening round of the state tournament Saturday at Bergman. The Lions will begin state tournament play Monday afternoon against Genoa Central.
