Riverside sees baseball and softball seasons end
Rector upset Riverside in the first round of the 2A-3 District Tournament, ending the Rebel's season Thursday afternoon at Marked Tree.
The Cougars broke open a close game, scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 15-6 victory over the Rebels. Rector's Cody Hager struck out 13 Rebels in going the distance to pick up the win. Hager (3-6) allowed just three earned runs while scattering seven hits. The Cougar pitcher also added a pair of hits while driving in three runs.
Dan Blackshare had two hits and two RBIs while Clinton Haley added a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Cougars, who earned a trip to next week's regional tournament. The victory pushed Rector's season record to 7-14.
Riverside (15-7) got a pair of hits and two RBIs from Morgan Fletcher while Cody Stallings added two hits with one RBI. M.J. Brewer (2-3) took the loss.
The Lady Rebels also saw their season come to a close, dropping an 8-3 decision to Rector in the first round of the 2A-3 District Softball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Marked Tree.
Kelly Fowler gave up two earned runs while striking out six Lady Rebels to pick up the victory for the Cougars, who advanced to the regional tournament with the win.
Kaitlyn Essman drove in four runs while Amanda Bradford hit a two-run triple to lead the Rector offense.
Riverside began the week, pulling out a 13-12 victory over East Poinsett County Monday afternoon at Lake City.
The Lady Warriors scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 10-3 Riverside lead, before the Lady Rebels scored the winning runs in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit.
Chaney McLean went the distance, striking out seven Lady Warriors to pick up the victory on the mound. McLean helped herself at the plate, going 2-4 while driving in three runs. Johnny Gamble went 2-4 with an RBI while Becca Frayer added a pair of hits and scored twice.
The Lady Rebels finish the season with a 6-9 record.
