Wheeler's Big Day Propels Lions Past Hornets

Manila's Blake Wheeler hit and pitched the Lions to a 13-3 victory over Harrisburg Monday afternoon, April 26, helping Manila clinch the 3A-3 conference overall baseball championship.

Wheeler homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs while going 3-4 at the plate. The senior southpaw picked up the win on the mound, striking out four while allowing only two runs and two hits in four plus innings of work.

Tray Malone also had a big day at the plate, with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Taylor Morgan added a pair of hits and also drove in three runs while Tracey Reinhart picked up a pair of hits and an RBI.

The victory improves the Lions to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in league play.

The Lady Lions also picked up a win with a 6-5 come from behind victory over Rector Monday afternoon at Manila.

Manila scored two runs in the sixth inning to rally for the win.

Kimberly Wise (11-2) was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 Lady Cougars. Wise scattered five hits on the day without surrendering a walk.

Katie Donner went 3-4 at the plate with three stolen bases and an RBI as the Lady Lions improved to 12-2 on the season.

Leigha Woody and Kristen Wise had two hits apiece for Manila. Woody drove in a run while Wise stole a pair of bases.

Both Manila teams opened District Tournament play Monday afternoon. The Lion baseball team opened tournament play at Corning in a 2:30 contest, while the Lady Lions traveled to Hoxie for their tournament opener at 3:00.
