Lion Malone fires no-hitter

Manila's Tray Malone fired a no-hitter and blasted a home run, giving the senior right-hander all the run support he would need in leading the Lions to a 10-0 whitewash over Harrisburg Friday afternoon in 3A-3 conference action.

The hard throwing Malone struck out 12 Hornets while issuing just one walk on the day as the Lions improved to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in league play. The victory clinched the south-half of the conference division, earning Manila a spot in the regional tournament.

Third baseman Zach Birmingham ripped a pair of triples while going 4-4 at the plate to support the Lion offensive attack. Birmingham finished the day with three RBIs and three runs scored. Taylor Morgan had a pair of hits and scored twice.

The Lions started the week with a 12-0 shutout of league foe Hoxie. Manila used a big six run second inning, highlighted by Dillon Burrow's three run round-tripper. Zach Birmingham had another productive day at the plate, lining out three more hits while knocking in three runs and scoring three times.

Jared Hembrey and Blake Wheeler had two hits apiece, with Wheeler adding a pair of RBIs. Wheeler picked up the win to improve his record to 4-2 on the year. The senior southpaw pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 10 Mustangs while scattering six hits on the day.

Manila ran into a buzz-saw Thursday afternoon, losing to defending State 4A Champion Valley View, 12-2. Tyler Smith picked up the win to improve to 7-0 on the season and added a pair of doubles along with two RBIs to lead the Blazers.

Dustin Jones drilled a three run homer while Taylor Lindley drove in three runs on the day as the Blazers improved to 23-2 on the season.
