Trena Shedd, counselor for Manila Middle School, is making plans and looking forward to the first Benchmark Bash.
"Benchmark testing time can be so stressful, I wanted to find a way for students, teachers and parents to join together for a fun day in preparation of the testing," Shedd said. "I found this idea at a workshop. It is a high-energy, fun upbeat way to motivate everyone for the Benchmarks."
The Benchmark Bash will be for grades 5-8 at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the high school gymnasium.
"All of the parents are welcome to attend," Shedd said. "There will be a skit performed by the teachers performing several Benchmark songs to the tunes of several popular Rock and Roll songs."
Students will be served lunch, enjoy the skit and be treated to a sock hop in the gymnasium. Manila Band Director Jon Myers will help with the music.
There will be special-designed tee-shirts for sale for the day. Students are having a t-shirt design contest. The winning design will be used. The t-shirts will be $10 each.
Brandi Harmon, PAWS (parents assisting with services) coordinator, is helping with the preparation for the bash.
Shedd said there is a need for funding to help with the food.
"We will be feeding 350 students hot dogs, chips and soft drinks," she said. "We welcome individuals or businesses who would like to make a donation for the project. No donation is too small. We appreciate any and all help we receive."
