Mustang District Tournament Roundup
East Poinsett County put on a furious second half rally to post a 59-56 victory over Buffalo Island Central in the semifinals of the 2A-3 District Tournament Wednesday night, Feb. 17, at Rector.
The top seeded Mustangs held a commanding 33-18 lead at intermission, but were outscored 41-23 in the second half to rally for the victory. The Lady Warriors closed their 15 point halftime deficit to 39-36 entering the final period, and outscored BIC 23-17 in the fourth quarter to advance to the finals.
The top seeded Mustangs were led by freshman Brittany Fowler who scored 26 points. Holly Dempsey and freshman Cassidy Qualls netted six points apiece, Jenna Pike tallied five, while Emily Owens and Taylor Owens contributed four points each. Shelby Qualls added three points while Haley Parker pitched in two points to round out the Lady Mustang attack. BIC finished 13-18 from the foul line and hit one three pointer on the night.
EPC was led by Keyerah Young and Teria Young who scored 15 points apiece. Terrika Madden added 14 more. The Lady Warriors connected on 16-25 free throws and drilled three treys on the night.
Despite the loss, the Lady Mustangs will participate in next week's regional tournament at Midland.
Host Rector led after each quarter and posted a 54-45 victory, ending Buffalo Island Central's season Wednesday night in the first round of the 2A-3 Senior Boys District Tournament.
The Cougars held a 13-8 lead after the first period and took a 25-18 advantage into the dressing room at the half. Rector stretched its lead to 35-25 after three periods.
BIC rallied in the final quarter and cut the Cougar lead to 38-35 on back to back three pointers from senior Heath Hawkins with 5:17 left in the game. But Rector went on a 13-5 run to take a 51-40 lead and sank five free throws in the final minute to clinch the win.
Zack Burlison led Rector with 19 points while Kirk Horton added 15 more. Rector finished the night 16-23 from the foul line.
Hawkins led BIC with 12 points, hitting four three pointers. Daniel Davis scored eight, Ben Cole added six while Brandon Atkeison and James Tate tallied five points apiece. Brent Ray and Adrian Mondragon contributed four points apiece. The Mustangs connected on six of 10 from the foul line.
