Lady Rebels overtake Turrell to advance to regionals
Riverside's Kyley Campbell scored 13 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to fuel the Lady Rebels to a 64-59 come-from-behind victory over Turrell Tuesday night, Feb. 16, in 2A-3 district tournament action at Rector. The win propels Riverside into this week's regional tournament at Midland.
Turrell began the final period holding a 47-38 lead and pushed their margin to 11 points before Riverside began their comeback behind the strong play of Campbell and senior point guard Michelle Cobb, who also hit double figures with 19 points. Cobb started the Rebel rally with a three point play to cut the Lady Rocket lead to single digits before Campbell went to work, scoring eight straight points to tie the game 51-51 with 4:07 to go.
Freshman Lauren Weaver, who led the Lady Rebels with 21 points and 12 rebounds, gave Riverside the lead for good, 53-51, with an inside bucket at the 3:40 mark. Riverside scored nine of their last 11 points from the foul line to hold on for the win, ending the Lady Rocket's season.
Campbell hit nine of 10 free throws in the pivotal fourth quarter as the Lady Rebels finished the night 27-39 from the foul line.
Turrell jumped to a 14-9 lead after the opening period and took a 28-25 edge into the dressing room at the half.
Ashley Calvert finished with six points while Becca Frayer added one point to round out the Lady Rebel scoring. Riverside played without leading scorer Meagan Goza, who sat out with a knee injury.
Erica Chance led Turrell with 18 points. Sade Nelson tallied 15, Parsha Bedford netted 14 while Lenesia Gordon pitched in 10 points. Turrell connected on nine of 15 free throws and hit four three pointers on the night.
Marmaduke built a 10 point halftime lead and held off a second half Riverside rally to post a 44-37 victory over the Lady Rebels in the semifinals Wednesday night.
Riverside fought back in the third period, outscoring Marmaduke 12-3 to cut the lead to 33-32 entering the final frame. The Lady Greyhounds held Riverside to only five points in the fourth quarter to hang on for win.
Morgan Hatcher led Marmaduke with 12 points. The Lady Greyhounds hit eight of 13 free throws and connected on four three pointers.
Riverside, who dropped to 20-12 on the season, was led by Lauren Weaver who scored a game high 16 points. Kyley Campbell had nine, Michelle Cobb netted five, Becca Frayer scored four while Ashley Calvert added three points to round out the Lady Rebel attack. Riverside hit nine of 15 free throws and made two three pointers.
Riverside will begin regional tournament play this week at Midland.
