Marmaduke hands Lady Mustangs first Conference loss, 45-38
Marmaduke rallied from a five point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull out a 45-38 come-from-behind victory over Buffalo Island Central Monday night at Marmaduke. The Lady Greyhounds handed BIC its first conference loss of the season behind the strong fourth quarter play of seniors Michelle Greaney and Morgan Hatcher.
Marmaduke (16-10, 7-2 2A-3) tied the game with 4:00 to go before taking the lead in dropping the Lady Mustangs to 17-7 overall and 8-1 in conference action.
Greaney scored eight of her team high 19 points in the final frame, while Hatcher, who finished with a double-double, also added eight points in the final period. Hatcher completed the night with 10 points and 10 boards.
Marmaduke led 13-12 after the first quarter and the two teams went into halftime tied 20-20. BIC outscored the Lady Greyhounds 12-7 in the third quarter to take a 32-27 lead into the final period before Marmaduke rallied for the win in the final frame.
The Lady Greyhounds went to the free throw line 14 times in the fourth quarter, and connected on 12, led by Greaney's six for six performance at the line. Hatcher also was perfect from the foul stripe in the final period, nailing all four of her attempts.
Freshman Brittany Fowler led BIC with 17 points, but was held without a field goal in the second half. Shelby Qualls scored six while Holly Dempsey and Jenna Pike added five points apiece. Whitlee Rolland netted three points while Jamie Harris rounded out the Lady Mustang attack with two points.
BIC rebounded Friday night with a convincing 69-51 victory over Turrell at the Mustang Athletic Complex. Brittany Fowler recorded a double-double, pouring in 25 points while adding 12 boards to lead BIC, who moved to 18-7 overall and 8-1 in 2A-3 conference play.
Holly Dempsey also hit double digits with 16 points while Jenna Pike pitched in 11 more.
Porsha Bedford led Turrell with 19 points.
In junior high action, the Lady Mustangs fell 49-37 to undefeated Marmaduke, who improved to 25-0 on the year.
Cassidy Qualls and Kaylee Greathouse led BIC with 12 and 11 points respectively. Brittany Stockton tallied five points, Katelyn Sparkman scored four while Emily Owens and Madison Greathouse added two points apiece. Hannah Poe scored one point for the Lady Mustangs.
BIC will return to action Monday night when they take on East Poinsett County before traveling to Marked Tree for another 2A-3 conference matchup on Friday night.
