Cave City plodded their way to a 31-6 victory over Manila at a rain-soaked Caveman Field Friday night, Oct. 9, in 3A-3 conference football action.

The game was played in cold, damp and muddy conditions, but it was the Cavemen's potent rushing attack that proved to be the difference.

Cave City running back Tyler Engleman punished the Lions, gaining 237 yards while scoring three touchdowns on 25 carries. Teammate Tyler Poulette plowed his way to 84 yards on 14 rushes as the Cavemen ran for 374 yards on the night.

Cave City upped their lead to 12-0 when Nick Townsend picked off Manila quarterback Josh Miles and raced 20 yards for a score with 3:55 to go in the opening period. Engleman's two yard conversion run gave Cave City a 14-0 lead.

Manila answered on their next possession. Brian Borden's 30-yard kickoff return gave the Lions excellent field position at the Manila 40 yard line to start the scoring drive. Miles hit Helton with a 14-yard pass before running back Steven Green bolted 26 yards, giving the Lions a first down at the Cave City 20. Miles found a wide open Helton for a 20-yard touchdown connection to put the Lions on the board with 1:49 left in the first quarter. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete, leaving Cave City with a 14-6 lead.

Cave City came right back with a scoring drive of their own, capped off by Engleman's 30-yard touchdown romp at the 10:51 mark of the second period. The point after gave Cave City a 21-6 lead they would take into the dressing room at the half.

The Cavemen added 10 second half points to finish off the game.

Manila finished with 153 yards of total offense, including 104 through the air and 49 on the ground. Miles completed five of 16 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown while Helton led the Lions with five receptions on the night. Green led the Lions in rushing with 40 yards on seven carries.
